Merging Pottery Skills with
Language Development

Claynguage® is a clay-based language stimulation program designed to engage children in a variety of fun and exciting activities utilizing clay, pottery tools, and objects from the environment.

Claynguage® is guided by several evidence-based strategies used by speech-language pathologists to enhance children’s language skills. Specifically, clinicians (parents and teachers as well) expand children’s vocabulary size and diversity while also enhancing sentence production during Claynguage® lessons.

Program Origins

This program was originally developed by Hinda Rubin, MS, CCC-SLP in art classrooms. Hinda has over 30 years of experience as a speech-language pathologist and over 20 years of experience as a ceramist. Whether providing services in a one-to-one context or collaboratively in a group context (e.g., classroom based-services) to promote inclusion, the addition of clay and pottery tools added a great deal of excitement and helped create an environment conducive to many types of expression.

What People Are Saying

“My 5-year-old son has loved playing and learning with Hinda's Claynguage activities. The conversation prompts give us lots to talk about as he plays with the clay to create objects and scenes of what we discuss. My older daughter has joined in numerous times as well! It really gave us all a fun, sensory way to work on some of our language and communication skills - thumbs up all around! ”
